Habitat:
Native to swampy Atlantic Coastal areas of the Southeastern United States. It can be deciduous or evergreen, depending on its climate. Prefers acidic, poorly-drained soil and can survive occasional flooding.
Origin, history, and uses:
Cultivated as an ornamental tree for its large, vanilla-scented flowers.
